Both Photoshop and ImageReady refuse to open the files.

Ok, errm, do you know how to make non-optimized animations on ImageReady? Then I can try myself.

If you want to ensure it works for everyone you have to save it as a GIF which has a limit of 256 colors. That's besides the fact you can only save it as an animation by clicking "Save Optimized As..." in IR. I was going to adjust it as best I could so quality loss would be (almost) unnoticable.
